Senator John Horhn and State Treasurer Lynn Fitch will partner from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2016 at Center Stage of the Jackson Medical Mall to assist citizens in searching for and applying to claim money they may be owed.

The treasurer’s office receives and holds money owed to citizens until owners can be located. The money comes from companies and corporations that go out of business, owe refunds but can’t find recipients, and from earnings that come from certain investments.

“The unclaimed property can come from un-refunded utility deposits, oil and gas royalty checks, deposits made on apartment rentals and so forth,” Senator Horhn stated. “I even found old residual payments from a couple of movies I appeared in.”

The Unclaimed Property program is one of several offered by the State Treasurer’s office.

“Since I was first elected, the State Treasurer’s office has returned more than $57 million in unclaimed property to Mississippians,” State Treasurer Lynn Fitch stated. “We’re grateful to partners like Senator Horhn for helping us get the word out and locate the rightful owners of the millions left to be claimed.”

Those applying for unclaimed funds must have in their possession two forms of identification such as a driver’s license or state issued ID card and proof of residency such as a utility bill. Appropriate forms and assistance will be provided. A notary will also be present free of charge to push the process forward.
