Bassfield Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Bill Matthews, lost his life in the line of duty due to a heart attack on Tuesday evening, February 14th. Matthews was on the scene of a brush fire with his fellow fire fighters and was found slumped over in the driver’s seat of his fire truck. Those at the scene performed CPR then Matthews was transported to the Jefferson Davis Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Matthews, a marine veteran, was a long time service memeber of the Bassfield Volunteer Fire Department. Bassfield mayor, Pat Courtney, described him as a role model to his fire service family and also to the community as a whole.
