The Lawrence County girls basketball team claimed the MHSAA 4A state championship victory at 38 to 34 over Byhalia on Thursday night. This is the first state title the Lawrence County girl’s basketball program has won since the consolidation of Lawrence County schools in 1987. It was a tight game leading all the way up to the final buzzer and head coach, Vikki Rutland, hails Lawrence County’s defense as the leading factor in their victory. This is a significant victory for the Cougar community and hopefully the first of many more to come for the Lawrence County Lady Cougar basketball program.
