A Lamar County man died Monday evening due to injuries from a lightning strike. Thomas Whorton III, 27 of Lumberton was pronounced dead at Forrest General Hospital. The incident occurred on Pine Burr Road about 4:30 Monday afternoon. Whorton along with another man was outside near a truck when a lightning bolt struck and knocked both men off their feet. First responders immediately began doing CPR and was taken by ambulance to Forrest General. The National Weather Service reminds us that lightning is a killer, so when thunder roars, go indoors.
